Aged Care Courses

Looking for a manual tasks training course for aged care facilities, carers and others who work with the elderly?

The Aged Care Stream place great emphasis on assisting and encouraging the older person to retain, or regain, their physical independence following a decrease of function. This may include a fall, an illness or relocation from their home to a residential care facility. The Work Health and Safety Act and the risk management process are embedded within the theoretical elements of the course, with examples specific to the working with the older person used in the course.

This stream comprises of the Aged Care Basic and the Aged Care Advanced Courses. These two courses, each of 4 days duration, and a workplace assessment enable a competent participant to train within their workplace. The Aged Care Basic course focuses on developing safe postures and actions and risk assessment for use with the predominantly ambulant older person. These transfers include sitting, standing, walking, moving up from the floor and moving around in bed.The Aged Care Advanced course builds on the Aged Care Basic and develops competency when working with a more dependent person and in transfers requiring two staff. Equipment commonly used when working with an older person is also used and discussed.

The outcomes of the Aged Care stream are that a competent participant can:

  • Describe and demonstrate the independent movement of the older people

  • Apply fundamental postures and actions to a variety of manual  tasks within the aged care environment

  • Give and receive feedback according to adult learning principles

  • Apply occupational safety and health and risk management within the aged care environment

  • Give instructions and directions, which facilitate and encourage participation of the older person

  • Recognise how poor handling can increase risk and dependence

  • Work as part of a team
