Behaviours of Concern or Challenging Behaviours

Have you identified risks related to client behaviours of concern or challenging behaviours?

Safe Actions conducts a Gently Release Holds short course for the carer who works with a person who;

  • Has behaviours such as grabbing rails, poles or clothing

  • Takes hold of a carer by the arms

  • Places these holds to obtain something, escape something or in response to anxiety, but not malice

  • May not be able to respond to requests to let go, or ability to retain information about not holding care workers

Strategies that gently release these holds and maintain a caring relationship with the person are taught. These strategies are placed within the context of communication, de escalation, distraction and occupational safety and health. The importance of team work and the use of behaviour support plans is explored.
